The first female Afghan-born fashion designer to appear in Australian mainstream media has been recognised for her work in the field.
Pakistani-Australian fashion designer Zainab Khan was born in Peshawar in 1979 and has worked extensively in the fashion industry since then.
The 34-year-old has recently released her first collection, featuring some of her favourite designs and colours, at The New York Fashion Week.
She also recently launched her first Australian fashion line called The Women’s Fashion Group, and has also been featured on the front page of the Daily Telegraph.
Zainab, who is originally from Afghanistan, said the work of women designers is essential for their survival and is a great honour to be recognised for it.
“I am honoured to have been included in the New York fashion week and I am proud of the fact that this is the first time that a woman has been included and that it is an international award,” she said.
“There is a lot of work that goes on behind the scenes to ensure that women’s issues are recognised and that women are treated with the respect they deserve.”
The award was presented by the New Zealand Council for International Women’s Day, with Zainbhan also being recognised for “extraordinary efforts to advance women’s empowerment”.
Zainbh was one of a number of international fashion and beauty awards winners in 2016, including the Victoria Cross, the International Designer of the Year award and the World Designer of Women’s Design Award.
She has also won the prestigious Pritzker Prize, which recognises the best in design.
Zayat Khan is the founder and CEO of Zainan Group, a boutique fashion house based in Melbourne, Australia.
She said her mother and father both worked in the garment industry in Peshwa, and she grew up loving all things Pakistani.
“We are all Pakistani-Australians, but the things that we love the most are fashion, culture and our identity as women,” Zayat said.
Zaynab Khan is known for her creations that have influenced the fashion world.
Her work has been featured in publications such as the Financial Review, The Australian Financial and Fashion, and is the inspiration behind the company’s first line of women’s clothing.
Zashika Khazra, Zainah’s husband, was born and raised in Peshwara.
“When I was in the school years, I would look at my mother and she would tell me she loved my clothes, so I decided to become a fashion designer and I always kept my clothes in the house, as if they were my own,” Zashika said.
